バイデン大統領の認知機能低下が懸念される新たな事例です。

先週行われた選挙集会の中で、バイデン氏は2021年のG7首脳会議時の逸話に触れ、ドイツのコール首相と2021年1月6日のワシントン議事堂で起きた暴動について話をした、と発言。コール首相は2017年に亡くなっており、2021年はメルケル首相ですから、メルケル氏とコール元首相を混同したと思われるというものです。

また、同じく2021年のG7において、フランスのミッテラン大統領とも話した、とも発言。ミッテラン元大統領は1996年に亡くなっており、こちらは当時のマクロン大統領と混同したもののようです。

多くのメディアが新たな"gaffe"と取り上げています。

President Biden claimed he spoke with the late German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who died in 2017, in 2021 while recalling past conversations during fundraising events on Wednesday. The gaffe marks his second of the week.

The gaffe on Wednesday is similar to the one Biden made on Sunday after he claimed he spoke with François Mitterrand, a French president who died in 1996, at the same G7 meeting.

立て続けに起きた"gaffe"について、ホワイトハウス報道官は、

misspeak

という言葉を使い、バイデン氏を擁護しています。

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended President Biden on Thursday when asked about a gaffe in which the president said he spoke in 2021 with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl – who actually died four years earlier – arguing that misspeaking "happens to all of us, and it is common."

"misspeak"の定義を確認すると、

To speak or pronounce incorrectly.

To speak mistakenly, inappropriately, or rashly.

(American Heritage Dictionary)

とあります。英和辞典では、言い間違える、間違って話す（言う）、などとあります。

大統領の発言は単なる言い間違いであり、認知機能の低下などではない、という思いが滲んでいるようです。

言い間違いは誰にでもよくある、という事なんですが、果たして？
