今日の1語は、"sashay"です。

歩くという意味ですが、単に歩く（walk）というより、気取って歩く、目立つように歩く、という意味合いの表現です。

モデルがファッションショーで舞台や花道を颯爽と歩き回る、あの感じです。

たまたま別の記事も見つけたので、もうひとつ引用です。

この"sashay"という単語の語源が面白いので取り上げた訳ですが、フランス語chasséから来ていると辞書の語源欄にあります。

chassé（シャッセ）というのはバレエ、ダンスの用語で、左右の足を滑らせるようにして交代させる動きのことを指すようです。

この「シャッセ」が、「サシェイ」（"sashay"）という発音の単語になった訳ですが、音が前後入れ替わって生まれたようにも見えます。

言語学では音位転換とか、言い間違いにより生まれた単語など、興味深い現象がありますが、"sashay"については「変形」という解説があるのみで、それ以上の説明は見当たりません。

ちなみに、フランス語chasséは英単語"chase"と語源を同じくします。
