一昨日に続き、今日もまた人工知能（AI）の話題です。

AI企業草分けとも言えるOpenAIに勤務していた元社員らが、AI技術の安全性などについて懸念を表明するレターを一般公開したことが物議を醸しています。

元社員らは、AI関連企業の社員は革新的技術がもたらすリスクや負の側面について意見表明する機会が与えられていないなどとして、業界全体の変革が必要であると主張している模様です。

AI関連企業の「闇」を暴露、という感じでしょうか。

In the latest development of the OpenAI-is-a-disaster saga, a group of current and former OpenAI employees has gone public with concerns over the company's financial motivations and commitment to responsible AI. In a New York Times report published Tuesday, they described a culture of false promises around safety.

"The world isn't ready, and we aren't ready," Daniel Kokotajlo, a former OpenAI researcher, wrote in an email announcing his resignation, according to the Times report. "I'm concerned we are rushing forward regardless and rationalizing our actions."

Also on Tuesday, the whistleblowers, along with other AI insiders, published an open letter demanding change in the industry. The group calls for AI companies to commit to a culture of open criticism and to promise not to retaliate against those who come forward with concerns.

While the letter isn't specifically addressed to OpenAI, it's a pretty clear subtweet and another damaging development for a company that has taken more than enough hits in the last couple of weeks.

OpenAI社はここのところ様々なゴタゴタに見舞われているそうですが、元社員によるオープンレターは同社を巡る混乱を改めて印象づけるものと見られているようです。

引用した部分の最後の方に、

While the letter isn't specifically addressed to OpenAI, it's a pretty clear subtweet and another damaging development for a company

とあります。ここで"subtweet"という表現が目に留まりました。

ツイート（tweet）というからにはSNSのツイッター（現在の呼称はX）にまつわる表現と思われるものの、その意味するところは実のところ知りませんでした。

調べてみると、"subtweet"というのは他人について、その相手を直接引用、またメンションすることなく、話題にするツイート（投稿）を指すのだそうです。

そして、この"subtweet"という単語がMerriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン版）ではエントリになっているのを知って正直驚きました。

以下のように定義されています。

a usually mocking or critical tweet that alludes to another Twitter user without including a link to the user's account and often without directly mentioning the user's name

「メンション」というのは、これもSNS用語として定着している感がありますが、SNSの投稿で他人の名前（アカウント名）を引用することを指します。アットマーク（@）はそのメンションに際して使われますが、そうするとメンションされたユーザーは通知を受け取ることになり、自分が話題にされているということを知ることになる訳です。

"subtweet"とはこのようなメンションをしないやり方、つまりアットマークを使わずに他人について話題にするもので、つまり話題にされている本人には言及されたことが分からないことになります。このようなやり方は相手に対する陰口を叩いているようなことにもなるのですが、実際、"subtweet"はネガティヴな話題や批判的な言及をする際に用いられることが多いといいます。

オープンレターはOpenAI社を名指ししていないものの、同社の（杜撰な？）内部状況を想起させる内容であるが故に、"subtweet"とここで表現されているものだと考えることができるでしょう。

ちなみに"subtweet"のsub-とはサブリミナル（subliminal）のことだそうです。

サブリミナル効果という言葉を聞いたことがあるかと思います。サブリミナルとは識閾下と訳されますが、ある刺激にさらされる際にその刺激を意識することができる境界ギリギリのことを言う用語です。

つまり直接意識させることなく訴えかけるということであり、直接相手を言及しないけれども言及している相手を思い起こさせるという"subtweet"の効果を言っているものです。
