ジーンズと言えばリーバイス（Levi Strauss）というくらい有名なブランドです。

デニム人気の高まりもあって同社の売上げは伸びているそうですが、株価の方は下げているという記事が目に留まりました。

Denim is having a moment with consumers, but it hasn't led to a major sales boost at Levi Strauss. 

The jeans creator on Wednesday posted fiscal second-quarter revenue that fell just short of Wall Street's expectations at a time when shoppers are stocking their wardrobes with denim dresses, skirts and ultra low-rise baggy pants. 

Levi's posted better-than-expected earnings as its direct sales to consumers and cost cutting continue to bear fruit. The company raised its dividend by 8% to 13 cents per share, its first increase in six quarters.

Still, shares fell about 12% in extended trading.

以前、デニム（denim）という単語がフランスの地名から来ていることを取り上げました。その際、ジーンズ（jeans）も同じく地名から来ていると書き、そのままになっていましたが、本日ようやくその機会となりました。

では"jeans"はどこの地名から来ているのかというと、何とイタリアのジェノバなんですね。

辞書の語源欄にも載っているかた思いますが、"jeans"とは、

Gene fustian（ジェノバのファスティアン織）

という意味で、ジェノバを指す"Gene"が"jean"と変化したものなんですね。

ファスティアン織（fustian）というのは、イタリア各地で生産されていた丈夫な綿織物のことだそうですが、ジェノバ港からヨーロッパ各地に輸出されたそうです。

Jean as a cloth comes from the phrase jean fustian, a modern spelling from the mid-16th century of Gene fustian. Fustian is a type of twilled cotton cloth. Gene (or Genes) is a Middle French spelling of Genoa, the port city in northwestern Italy. Jean fustian, or just jean, was a particular fabric that was manufactured in and distributed from Genoa, Italy.

アメリカ発祥と言われるジーンズやデニムですが、その語源となった地名はアメリカからかけ離れたイタリアやフランスというのは興味深いところです。
