Sometimes the foster care system absorbs mentally ill children even when their parents do not voluntarily give up custody. For the Kendalls, the trouble with their daughter, Jamie, started roughly at age 12. She told outlandish lies, once producing a photo of a baby cousin as proof that she had a son. She disappeared for days at a time. The diagnosis was histrionic personality disorder, an illness characterized by a pathological need for attention.

"especially stress the use of disparaging or abusive language"(American Heritage Dictionary. Third Edition.)

vituperative rhetoric
vituperative name-calling
vituperative attack
vituperative tone
vituperative address

Ulysses H. Grant's scathingly strident opinion of “Obama's leftist government” as “the enemy of democracy,” full of “left-winged radical Democrats” trying to “brainwash you” sounds remarkably akin to nothing less than that of a right-winged radical.

Instead of tossing off such vituperative comments, it would have been nice if Grant had deigned to elucidate constructive solutions to the problems he perceives. As is so often the case with such derision, however, no answers are forthcoming.

The 50-peso coins - worth about 10 cents (6p) - were issued in 2008, but no-one noticed the mistake until late last year.

Instead of C-H-I-L-E, the coins had C-H-I-I-E stamped on them. The coins have since become collectors' items and the mint says it has no plans to take them out of circulation.

The BBC's Gideon Long, in the Chilean capital Santiago, says people have been hoarding the coins in the hope their value rises. But the mistake has cost the mint's general manager, Gregorio Iniguez, and several other employees, their jobs.

You use a big word!"

religious
devout
pious

With Rockefeller I didn't hear that private voice -- in fact, I didn't hear any voice at all. The director showed me the 1,700-page transcript of an interview done between 1917 and 1920 that had never been made public. In the transcript Rockefeller recounted blow-by-blow every aspect of his career, and I was utterly fascinated. He was fiery, articulate, often funny and amazingly analytical. I instantly disliked many things. There was a sanctimonious tone, he denigrated his critics automatically, and he had a chilling capacity to rationalize his behavior. But compared to the cold-blooded monster of myth, this was a much more human and interesting figure, and I immediately realized I had an extraordinary opportunity. I decided on the spot to do the book.

disgrace
dishonor
shame

Any assessment of protest cycles in China would suggest that the absence of nationwide demonstrations for over a decade is attributable in part to the harshness with which the 1989 movement was repressed. On the surface, it appears that PRC recovered quickly from the domestic trauma and the international opprobrium brought on by Tiananmen Square. The leadership turmoil surrounding the incident quickly subsided as Jiang Zemin consolidated his control over the party's leadership.
