11日夕方から12日未明にかけて関東地方を通過した台風15号は太平洋側、すなわち東側から日本列島を西へ横切るという異例の動きを見せた台風でした。また、茨城県に初めて上陸した台風だとも言われています。

同じく暴風雨のニュースからの引用ですが、米中西部から北東部にかけて"derecho"と呼ばれる暴風雨が襲い、数百万人が影響を受けたと報じられました。

"tornado"や"hurricane"はよく聞く言葉ですが、"derecho"は知りませんでした。記事によれば暴風雨の一種ということになるようです。

手元にある研究社新英和大辞典は"derecho"を載せていないのですが、American Heritage Dictionaryなどによれば、"derecho"はスペイン語から来ており、その意味は英単語の"direct"に相当するとあります。"tornado"が渦を巻く旋風であるのに対し、"derecho"は回転する渦のような風ではなく、直接的な突風を特徴とするものであるということです。

改めてこれら暴風雨に関する単語を辞書で確認したのですが、"tornado"も"hurricane"もスペイン語由来の単語ですね。
