米民主党のオカシオ・コルテス議員がこのほど卵子凍結を行ったと自身のSNSで公表して話題になっています。36歳の若手ホープとされる同議員ですが、2028年大統領選への出馬が目されており、政治家としてのキャリアとプライベートの両立、また特に妊娠中絶を違法とする現政権下において、出産に関わる女性の権利というテーマに対する自らの主張、考えを発信したものと捉えられています。

コルテス議員は卵子凍結を公表した背景を述べた上で、同時に公表することに伴う"political tax"の認識もあった、とあります。ここで使われている"political tax"が具体的にどういう意味なのかよく分かりませんでした。

"political tax"という部分は敢えて引用符付きになっていますが、議員の発言の引用を示すのと同時に、この表現に特別な意味が込められていることを示したものと思われます。

ところで、別記事ではこの"political tax"は、"political risk"と置き換えられています。そして、その「リスク」とは、女性であるが故に負わなければならないものであるとの意図が込められていることが読み取れます。

考えてみれば結婚や出産というライフイベントにおいて、それがキャリアにどう影響するか、という詮索は、女性に対してなされることはしばしばですが、男性に対してはあまり無いのが実情ではないでしょうか。

今でこそ女性は結婚や出産後も職場復帰、男性の育休取得も当たり前となりましたが、かつてはそうではなく、今日においても、結婚や出産というイベントと（それらがもたらす）女性のキャリア（継続）への影響は、言わず語らずとも一般の興味を集める話題となる感があります。

コルテス議員のいう"political tax"とは女性政治家故に纏いつく負担、負荷を言ったものと解釈できます。税金（tax）は社会において位置する階層が異なれば負担額も変わりますが、政治家特有、女性特有、と考えるならば、"political tax"の意味するところは腑に落ちます。（有名人が世間一般からあれこれ詮索されたり、やっかみを受けたりすると「有名税」だから仕方ない、と言ったりしますが、それと似たところがあるかと。）
