hippocampus

Taxi drivers could be less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease because of how they memorise routes, research suggests.

Scientists suspect that regularly driving from memory may boost brain power as a new study shows taxi drivers and ambulance drivers are much less likely to develop the form of dementia as they age.

Senior study author Professor Anupam Jena, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, said: "Our results highlight the possibility that neurological changes in the hippocampus or elsewhere among taxi and ambulance drivers may account for the lower rates of Alzheimer's disease.
(Martin Bagot. Ditch the Sat Navs as taxi drivers who memorised routes 'less likely to get Alzheimer’s'. The Mirror. December 16, 2024.)

British Medical Journal

hippocampus

Study lead author Dr Vishal Patel, a resident physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, said: "The same part of the brain that's involved in creating cognitive spatial maps - which we use to navigate the world around us - is also involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

A man, a plan, a canal — Panama!

A man, a plan, a canal – Panama!

That sentence is one of the greatest palindromes, penned in 1948 by British writer and mathematician Leigh Mercer.

But the Panama Canal – nicknamed the Big Ditch – was on my bucket list for much more than just a clever play on words.

For this is one of the world’s mightiest engineering marvels.

A 48 mile long world changing achievement linking two oceans across a continental divide that is 100 years old on August 15.
(Nigel Thompson. Panama Canal cruise is a fascinating trip though 100 years of history. Mirror. July 12, 2014.)

A man, a plan, a canal – Panama!

raw deal

President-elect Donald Trump over the weekend suggested the US should retake the Panama Canal, an idea that was immediately rejected by the government of Panama, which has controlled the passage for decades.

It’s not clear how seriously Trump is taking his threat to reclaim control over the canal, though the weekend was not the first time he has said the US is getting a raw deal. The president-elect has not clarified how he would force a sovereign, friendly country to cede its own territory.
(Michael Williams. What’s the history of the Panama Canal, and why is Trump threatening to retake control of it? CNN. December 23, 2024.)

Heimlich maneuver

"Heimlich maneuver"

"Heimlich maneuver"

An 8-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of his choking friend in the elementary school cafeteria.

Thomas Conley, a second-grade student at Porter Elementary School in Mesa, Arizona, noticed that his friend was choking on a grape and sprang into action, according to local reports.

Conley immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver — also known as abdominal thrusts — on Isaiah Rodriguez, which dislodged the grape.
(Melissa Rudy. Boy, 8, saves choking friend with Heimlich maneuver. Fox News. December 23, 2024.)

Introduced by Dr. Henry Heimlich in 1975, the Heimlich maneuver is recommended by the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care as the first line of treatment for airway obstruction.
(ibid.)

"Heimlich maneuver"

enology

Two scientists at the University of California, Davis, believe they discovered why Cabernets, Pinot Noirs and other types of red wine cause such brutal hangovers.

Andrew Waterhouse, an enology professor, and Apramita Devi, a postdoctoral researcher in food science and technology, told The Conversation that red wines contain a lot of quercetin, which is affecting the body’s ability to process alcohol properly.
(Eric Todisco. Heads up, winos: Science finally knows why red wine causes such punishing hangovers. New York Post. December 22, 2024.)

enotourism

oenophilia
