蒼白 ― blanch

考えもしなかったことが起きたとき、血の気が引く、と言います。青ざめる、とも言います。

顔が青くなる、と言いますが、青いというよりは、血の気が引いたせいで、どちらかというと白くなる、という方が近いとも思われます。もちろんこのことを日本語では青くなると言い、顔色が悪い事を、顔が青いと表現するのですが、英語で”青ざめる”は語源的には、”白”にあります。

今日の単語、"blanch"はフランス語の"blanc"、つまり”白”に語源があります。"blank"（空白）と同じです。

But even savvy parents may blanch at the news that 80% of high school students in a new survey admitted to lying to their parents about something "significant" in the past year. The finding is in line with past reports and is not the most shocking thing in the survey: After all, 59% of the 43,000 teens surveyed by the Josephson Institute of Ethics said they'd cheated on a test, and 27% said they'd stolen from a store.
