米、シリアへ軍事介入か ― make case

シリア情勢が緊迫してきています。アサド政権が化学兵器を使用したということで国際的な批判が高まっているものですが、アメリカが軍事介入を行う可能性に言及しています。

一連の報道で、"make case"という、ちょっと分かったような、よく分からないような表現が使われています。どういう意味なのでしょうか？

"case"という単語の解釈がポイントとなりそうですが、ごく基本的、一般的な単語であるが故に意味も使われ方も多様であるというのはよくあることです。実際、辞書を引いてみると、"case"には実に様々な意味があり、"make case"で何を言わんとしているのか、（このフレーズを知らない人には）判然としません。

そこで、"make case"という成句を検索するのですが、ランダムハウス英和を見ても載っていないようです。

というものがあり、これは“自らの立場を明らかにする”という意味が載っています。コンテクストに照らしてみると、なるほどオバマ大統領が軍事介入の姿勢を明確にしたということかと解釈すれば、大きくははずれていないようにも思えます。
