Google Glassなどウェアラブルコンピューティングの先端を行くグーグルが今度は医療分野に乗り出すようです。

グーグルは、糖尿病患者向けに、血中のグルコース（ブドウ糖）濃度を測定するチップを埋め込んだコンタクトレンズを開発していることを明らかにしました。


Google's skunkworks "X" lab is building a contact lens that can monitor glucose levels in the tears of diabetics, and warn them when it drops too low.

The wireless-communicating device was unveiled by Google in a blogpost on Thursday, and may also one day contain tiny LEDs that'll light up if the wearer becomes hypoglycemic.

"We're now testing a smart contact lens that's built to measure glucose levels in tears using a tiny wireless chip and miniaturized glucose sensor that are embedded between two layers of soft contact lens material," the internet kingpin explained. "We're testing prototypes that can generate a reading once per second."

Though the technology is in its "early days", Google says it has completed multiple clinical research studies that refined the prototype.

とはどういう意味でしょうか？そのまま訳せば、“ガスを使って料理中”ということになりますが、意味がつながりません。

色々と調べると、"cook on gas"（あるいは、"cook with gas"）は俗語表現で特別な意味があることが分かりました。ランダムハウス英和辞書によると、


熱がこもる、スムーズに作動する
とてもうまくやる；正しい考え方をする
最先端に通じている


という意味が載っています。何となく分かってきました。ここでは恐らく、“最先端を行っている”という意味で用いられていると考えられます。

そもそも、"cook"の自動詞としての意味に、"to perform, do, or proceed well"（Merriam Webster Dictionary）という意味があるのですが、"cook with gas"は、まだガスによる火力を使ったような調理が一般的でなかった時代に最先端の手段として考えられたところからそのような表現で用いられるようになったのでしょう。
