黙秘？ ― stonewall

（私の勉強不足かも知れませんが）見慣れない表現です。


CLEVELAND, Ohio – Geoffrey Gurkovich – the Cleveland man charged with the murder of 5-year-old Jermani Brooks – has stonewalled investigators since his Tuesday arrest, a detective said.

An exchange in Cleveland Municipal Court Thursday between detectives on the case and the suspect's attorney reveals investigators have unanswered questions about the night they believe Gurkovich gunned down Jermani and seriously wounded her mother, 33-year-old Noni Brooks.

文脈からして、“黙秘する”という意味で使われていると思われますが、辞書を引くと、


意図的に避ける；非協力的な態度を取る；言い逃れをする、しっぽをつかまれないように振る舞う
（ランダムハウス英和辞書）


という意味が載っており、黙秘という言葉は見当たりません。また、


（特に長時間にわたる議論によって）法案の通過を妨害する


という意味は先日取り上げた"filibuster"の意味であり、これは政治家のTacticsの1つであり、被疑者の“黙秘”と同レベルの表現なのかと思わされます。

Merriam Websterによると、


To refuse to comply or cooperate with


となっています。一般に非協力的な態度を取ることを意味するのだと解釈できます。一方、American Heritage Dictionaryの定義では、


To refuse to answer or cooperate with; resist or rebuff


とあり、"to refuse to answer"をみてようやく“黙秘”の意味にあたりそうだという確信を得ました。
