登山の用語（２） ― crampon

今週のテーマは登山で使われる用語です。

2日目の今日は“アイゼン”なのですが、英語では"crampon"と言います。

“アイゼン”自体が和製の用語らしく、正しくはドイツ語のSteigeisenとなります。ここで、Steigは山道の意味、Eisenは鉄の意味です。山道で転んだり滑ったりしないように靴に装着する鉄のかんじきがSteigeisen、すなわちアイゼンです。

Merriam Websterでアイゼン（crampon）の定義を見てみましょう。

"crampon"は単数形ですが、実際には"crampons"という複数形で用いられることがほとんどのようです。

また、"crampon(s)"という代わりに、


climbing iron
grappling iron


という表現が用いられることも多いようです。
