マイクロソフト社が自社のOS（ウィンドウズ）で、Internet Explorerをデフォルトのインターネットブラウザにすることで他社製ブラウザの利用を妨げている、ということで独占禁止法に抵触するとして訴えられたというのはよく知られている話かと思います。

欧州では行政当局の指導を受けて、Internet Explorer以外のブラウザもインストールできるよう、選択する画面が表示されるようになっていたそうですが、当局による制限の期間が終了したため、MS社はもはやその必要がなくなったということで選択画面を削除したそうです。

さて、記事のタイトルに出てくる、

の部分に着目しましょう。"a**"は文字をアスタリスクで省略しています。"a"から始まる3文字の英単語は何でしょうか？

"f"で始まるいわゆるFワードにしろ、"a"で始まる単語にしろ大体想像がつきますね。

私が悩んだのは、"pane"の解釈でしたが、これは発音が同じ"pain"と選択画面の"pane"をかけた洒落でした。

つまり、


pain in the a**


ということになります。

"pain in the ass"は“悩みの種”（ランダムハウス英和辞書）という意味です。

MS社にとって欧州の当局から義務付けられたブラウザ選択画面はいわば“目の上のたんこぶ”みたいなものだったのではないでしょうか。

ちなみに、

という表現もあり、意味は同じです。
