オーストラリア・シドニーのオフィス街にあるカフェで発生した立てこもり事件は、警官隊が突入し、犯人と人質の2人が死亡するという最悪の結末を迎えました。

オーストラリアの寛容な移民政策がこのような事態をもたらした、とかテロは未然に防げたはず、などといった意見が出ているようですが、豪政府が今回の事件をきっかけにテロ対策を見直す必要に迫られていることは間違いありません。


Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Thursday admitted Sydney's cafe siege was "a horrific wake-up call" as details emerged of the final minutes of the standoff which left the gunman and two hostages dead.

Abbott has ordered an urgent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and why deranged self-styled Islamic cleric Man Haron Monis was not under surveillance given his history of extremism and violence.

アボット首相は今回の事件を"horrific wake-up call"と表現したそうです。

"wake-up call"とは、目覚ましのモーニングコールのことですが、

という意味もあります。日本語で言えば、警鐘を鳴らすもの（一件）、といった意味になるでしょうか。
