go bananas

"go bananas"という成句をご存知でしょうか？

ランダムハウス英和辞書では、頭がおかしくなる、という意味が載っています。用例として下記の引用を読んでみましょう。

動物園のサルが、"(have) gone bananas"ということで、サルにバナナ、となるとしゃれの要素も出てくるわけですが、動物園にとっては飼料として廃棄予定の食料品をスーパーマーケットから安く入手することは死活問題です。

その飼料が手に入れられなくなると、飼育されている動物も困ります。

上記の引用では、


went ape


という表現も使われていますが、こちらはひどく怒る、興奮する、という意味です。

"go bananas"もおそらく同義で用いられているのだと思います。つまり、サルは怒っています。
