11月も後半となり、寒くなってまいりました。関東では今日は雨予報で、曇天下では風がちょっと吹いただけでも余計に寒く感じられました。

"vestibule"という単語をご存知でしょうか？

下記の引用では、"winter vestibule"とあります。

ニューヨークはもう雪が降っているのかもしれませんが、建物の入り口と外部を隔てるスペースが"vestibule"ということになります。室内の温度を一定に保つバッファーの役割を果たすものです。

"vestibule"は前室、前房などと訳されますが、寒い中暖を求めて入ったレストランで、来客の度に寒い風が入ってくるのに悩まされることがなくなります。

極寒にあまり慣れていない私は、札幌に出張した際の移動中、一般の住居で、建物の玄関を隔てるもうひとつの構造物（つまり、"vestibule"）があることに気がつき、さすが雪国だなあと思った記憶があります。
