昨日、衆議院が解散しました。

総選挙となりますが、今回の解散については自民党による恣意的な解散だとの批判が強くあります。

安倍首相はこの時期の解散・総選挙であれば勝てると踏んだところがあるようですが、小池東京都知事が代表を務める新党との対立を余儀なくされています。

衆院の解散は言うまでもなく、国民の「信を問う」ことにある訳ですが、今回の結果がどうなるかは神のみぞ知るといったところでしょうか。

小池新党を予測していたのかは分かりませんが、安倍首相はある意味危険な賭けに出たのかもしれません。それが、

ということなのですが、この"iron grip"という表現を取り上げてみたいと思います。

これを何と訳したものかと思うのですが、コンテクストからすると、「高い支持率」というような意味合いでしょうか。

ここのところの安倍政権は決して支持率が高いとも思われませんが、森友学園問題やらによる支持率の下落を経て、北朝鮮情勢が緊迫している直近ではまた上昇傾向にあるということです。

この"iron grip"については辞書にもエントリがないので、コーパスを検索してみます。

下記の例では、影響力、という日本語がしっくりくるように思われます。
