ひょんなことからサーフィン用語の特集をしたのはもう8年も前のことになります。

今年の夏は房総半島の海へ遊びに行ったのですが、サーフィンに興じる人達を多く見かけて、何となくやってみたいなあなどと思いました。

いずれ挑戦するかもしれません（笑）

A man died Saturday afternoon from injuries suffered during a shark attack off Cape Cod, authorities said, the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts in eight decades.

Bystanders pulled a 26-year-old bite victim onto Newcomb Hollow Beach and performed CPR, Wellfleet Police Lt. Michael Hurley said in a statement. The man, who had been boogie-boarding with another person, according to the Associated Press, was sent to Cape Cod Hospital, where he later died, Hurley said. The Boston Globe identified the victim as Arthur Medici, from Revere, Massachusetts, a city just northeast of Boston and about a two-hour drive from Wellfleet.

を楽しんでいたそうですが、この”boogie-board”が今日取り上げる単語です。

辞書にも載っているのですが、”boogie-board”というのはサーフィンの一形態である”body-board”という、ボードに立つのではなくて、腹這いになって波乗りを楽しむやり方を言うそうです。

ここで、”boogie”ですが、これは”boogie-woogie”（ブギウギ）というジャズ演奏のスタイルを指す表現から来ているようです。

ここのサイトの解説によれば、このタイプのボードを初めて造ったTom Morey氏がジャズが好きで自身もドラム演奏をするので、ボードを”boogie”と名付けたらしいです。
