カチューシャロケット（！？）なる爆弾があるそうです。初めて聞きました。


BASRA, Iraq -- Unknown assailants fired three Katyusha rockets at Iraq's Basra airport Saturday, an airport official said, after a chaotic and violent night that saw hundreds of protesters burning tires on main streets and highways and setting ablaze the Iranian consulate in the city. The protests in Basra are the most serious to shake Iraq's oil-rich southern Shiite heartland in years.

Protesters are calling for an end to endemic corruption, soaring joblessness and poor public services and have turned their rage on neighboring Iran, blaming its outsized influence in Iraq's political affairs for their misery.

「カチューシャ」から最初に想起するのは、女性のヘアバンドでしょうか？あるいは、人気アイドルグループの流行歌の歌詞でしょうか？

"Katyusha rockets"をネットで検索してみると、多連装のロケット砲を指す呼称であることが分かります。

ウィキペディアの解説によれば、命中率は下がるものの、一度に多くのミサイルを敵地に打ち込んで敵を圧倒するのに役立つそうです。

何故に「カチューシャ」なのでしょうか？

ネットで見つけた、とあるソースによりますと以下のように解説されています。


The name “Katyusha” was not the official designation for the weapon — it was more of an affectionate moniker devised by rank-and-file soldiers. The original BM-13 launchers were manufactured at plant known as the Voronezy Komintern and accordingly bore a large “K” stamp on the side.

つまり、この多連装ロケット砲にはそれを製造していた工場のロゴマークの"K"が大きく刻印されていたのですが、それを兵士らが女性のファーストネームである"Katyusha"と親しみを込めて呼び始めたことから、それが定着した、という説があるそうです。

ロシア語を勉強したことのない人でもご存知かもしれないですが、英語名での"Catherine"（もしくは、Katherine）がロシア語では"Ekaterina"となり、さらにくだけたのが"Katyusha"です。

"Katyusha rockets"は第二次大戦当時にはドイツ軍を震え上がらせたと言われ、ミサイル発射時のうなる駆動音がオルガンの音のようにも聞こえたことから、"Stalin's orgel"の異名を取ったとも言われています。
