“cagey”という単語をご存知でしょうか？

人から何かを訊かれた時にあまり喋りたがらない様子や警戒していることを指して、”cagey”と表現するのですが、口語表現とあって、これまでに聞いたことがありませんでした。

引用した記事の用例のように、”caget about 〜”という使われ方が多いようです。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryによりますと、


wary of being trapped or deceived


という定義もあり、警戒心を以って事に当たるというのは聡明であること（clever）の証左でもあります。

その意味で、”cagey politician”のように名詞を修飾する用法も見られます。

スペルから一見、”cage”（檻）と関連するのかと思いましたが、全く関係なく、語源不詳とのことです。
