今日は”chip away”というフレーズを取り上げたいと思います。

このフレーズの意味、ご存知ですか？

きっかけとなった引用は以下です。


The Thesaurus Linguae Latinae was one of many big, scholarly projects taken on by the German government in the late 19th century.

Through two World Wars and German reunification, generations of Latin scholars have been chipping away at the same goal: documenting every use of every Latin word from the earliest Latin inscriptions in the 6th century BC up until around 200 AD, when it was in decline as a spoken language. “chip away”を辞書で引くと、


こつこつ削る（刻む）、慣習・決意などをなし崩しにしていく、（仕事・問題などを）少しずつ片付けていく
（ランダムハウス英和辞書）


と載っています。

引用記事の用例は、


...chipping away at the same goal...


となっていますので、ゴール（目標）に向かって、少しずつ努力していく、という意味合い、またイメージだと思われました。

一方で、「なし崩しにしていく」という意味合いは、全く逆の意味の様に思われます。

ランダムハウス英和の例文に下記の様なものがあります。


Repeated defeats chipped away at the team’s morale.


American Heritage Dictionaryで”chip”のエントリを見てみると、”chip away”というフレーズの定義には、


To reduce or make progress on something incrementally


とあって、”reduce”と”make progress”では意味合いがかなり違ってくると思われるのですが、1つになっているのが興味深く思われました。また、例文には


We chipped away until the problem was solved.


というものがあり、これは冒頭に引用した記事での用例と同じケースでしょう。

もう1つ引用します。

こちらは、”reduce (incrementally)”の方の意味合いです。
“chip”は小さな破片であり、動詞としては、少しずつ削り取る、というような意味です。その削り取る対象が何かによって、目標達成なのか、あるいは損なわれてしまう類のものなのかが決まってくるということになるでしょうか。

ところで、興味深いことに、手元にある研究社の大英和（第五版）には”chip away”の説明が全くありませんでした。
