閉幕した北京オリンピックでは積雪量が足らず、人工雪で補ったと報道されていました。

あまり寒くないのかなどと思ったりしたものですが、実際のところそれなりに寒いというのは地理的に見ても当たり前ですが、肌感覚としてなかなか分かりませんね。

張家口市の会場で行われたクロスカントリースキー（50キロフリー）では荒天に見舞われたため、スタートを1時間遅らせ、さらに30キロに短縮して行われました。

荒天のレースを1時間以上かけてゴールしたフィンランドの選手は、「下（しも）の部分」が凍る悲劇に見舞われたそうです。

A Finnish skier competing in a men's cross-country skiing race at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing suffered damage to his equipment on Saturday, but just not what you might expect, according to a report. 

Remi Lindholm, 24, of Finland, spent over an hour traversing the shortened men's 50km mass start free race in brutal temperatures and howling winds, causing his penis to become frozen, Reuters reported. 

"You can guess which body part was a little bit frozen when I finished ... it was one of the worst competitions I've been in," Lindholm told Finnish media. "It was just about battling through."

記事のタイトル（また本文中も）、"penis"（陰茎）と出てくるのでドキッとしますが（一応、解剖学の正式用語）、別表現では、"equipment"、また、

downstairs appendage

と表現されているのを興味深く思いました。

"downstairs"とは、階下の意味ですが、人間の上部と下部を分けて"downstairs"と表現する事例を初めて見るように思います。

また、appendageとは付属器官、例えば尻尾のような本体部分から飛び出たものを言いますが、これが何をいわんとするかはは明らかでしょう。

ちなみにReutersの記事では、

a particularly sensitive body part

という表現でした。

"downstairs"について、Oxford Dictionary of Euphemismsでは、

the genitalia. A genteel use by male and female.

という解説があり、婉曲表現として認知されているものであると分かります。（なお、"appendage"も同様に"penis"の婉曲表現。）

手元の英和辞典で"downstairs"を確認しましたが、このような婉曲表現の意味は見当たりませんでした。
