A Briton who was threatened with execution after being captured by Russian forces during the siege of Mariupol has been released alongside four other Britons and five international prisoners after the intervention of Saudi Arabia.

釈放された英兵のコメントが引用されていますが、

By the skin of our teeth

とあります。

これは、命からがら、という意味で、辛うじて死刑を免れたという英兵の心境を語っています。

それにしても、変わったフレーズです。歯（tooth）に皮膚（skin）はありませんから。

研究社の新英和大辞典によると、この表現は旧約聖書ヨブ記に由来するとあります。

富豪であったヨブがサタンのために様々な苦難に苛まれる話ですが、ヨブ自身がそのことを語る19章にこの表現が出てきます。該当箇所を引用します。

骨は皮膚と肉とにすがりつき

皮膚と歯ばかりになって

わたしは生き延びている。

2行目の「皮膚と歯ばかりになって」というところが該当すると思われます。

つまり、皮膚（skin）と歯（teeth）で、歯の皮膚（skin of teeth）とはなっていません。

この「皮膚と歯ばかりになって」という部分は、英語では、

And I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

(King James Version)

となっています。

研究社新英和では、原語の意味は不詳、とお茶を濁したような解説に留まっていますが、恐らくは聖書の原語（ヘブライ語）を逐語訳すると"skin of teeth"となってしまうのだろうと思われます。

残念ながら、ヘブライ語の知識がありませんのでこれ以上は分からず、話はこれで終しまいです。
