have one’s hands full

9月8日に逝去したエリザベス女王の後を受けてチャールズ3世が即位しましたが、先行きは甚だ不穏なものがあるようです。

国民的な人気と信頼を勝ち得ていた女王に対し、チャールズ王の方はどうかというと、そこまでの人間性というか人間力というか、そういった面で微妙だという見方があるようです。

以下に引用する記事で取り上げられているのは、英国に限らず、世界中に広がる英連邦諸国をどう束ねるか、という悩ましい問題です。

英連邦として英国王を君主として戴くオーストリアやカナダを始め、かつて植民地であった国家から構成されるコモンウェルスの存続が危ぶまれるということのようです。

引用した記事の小見出しに、

King Charles III will have his hands full stopping former British colonies from declaring independence from the crown.

とあります。

"have his hands full (〜ing)"というのは、

〜するのに手一杯である

という意味の慣用句です。

オーストラリアではかつて国民投票が行われたこともあり、女王の死を契機に、コモンウェルスからの離脱ドミノが起きるかも知れないという予測はあながち的外れでもないようです。
