The Choreography of Public Mourning

"choreograph"という単語は、舞踊を意味するギリシャ語khoros（ラテン語chorus）に、-graph（記述する）という接尾辞が付いたものです。

ところで、これらのギリシャ語、ラテン語はchorus（コーラス、合唱）の語源でもあります。

ギリシャ語khorosの語源は不詳のようですが、ギリシャ劇におけるコロスは、劇の解説などを担う役割で、その説明というのは言葉によるものや、合唱による音楽であったりしたもので、このことからchorusは音楽の合唱を意味するようになったそうです。

なお、今回のようなコンテクストで用いられる"choreograph"と同義の単語に、"orchestrate"があります。

オーケストラを指しているのはいうまでもありませんが、"orchestra"という単語もギリシャ劇における合唱隊（コロス）が位置する舞台の位置を指す名称でした。

今回のようなコンテクストで同じような意味合いで用いられる"choreograph"や"orchestrate"といった単語が、いずれもギリシャ劇に由来する単語というのは興味深い一致ですね。
