英・保守党の党首がいよいよ決まろうとしています。一方、新しい党首の選出に伴い、表舞台を去ることになるジョンソン首相の去就が注目されています。

側近などのコメントによれば、辞任以降も一定の影響力を持つだろうと言われており、今後も何かきっかけがあれば復活を目論んでいてもおかしくないと言われています。

これは何と訳したものでしょうか？

いくつかの辞書を引いてみましたが、そのものズバリのエントリはなく、意味を想像します。恐らくは慣用句の類と思われるのですが、然程定着していないためなのか、見当たらないのです。

直前の内容から、お金の話であることは想像がつきます。実際、"hay"には少額のお金という意味があります。

同じ話題の別記事を参照したところ、やはり同じ発言を引用しており、下記のようなくだりがありました。

やはりお金の話ですね。

"put hay in the loft"を文字通りに訳すならば、ロフトに干し草を置く、となりますが、ロフトとは納屋の2階のことで、家畜の飼料にする干し草を蓄えておく場所です。

干し草（hay）に縁の無いない生活をしている人間には実感が湧きにくいところですが、家畜を養うために蓄えておく、必要時に備えておくということでしょう。

干し草（hay）に関しては、この他にも、寝床（"hit the hay"）や好機（"make hay of〜"）などの意味もあります。
