先日死去したエリザベス女王の棺はバッキンガム宮殿からウェストミンスターに移送され、正装安置（lie-in-state）されました。

LONDON (AP) — The coffin of Queen Elizabeth II left Buckingham Palace for the last time Wednesday, borne on a horse-drawn carriage and saluted by cannons and the tolling of Big Ben, in a solemn procession through the flag-draped, crowd-lined streets of London to Westminster Hall. 国葬が行われる9月19日まで、丸4日間に渡り安置されるそうで、弔問に訪れるイギリス国民の列はテムズ川沿いに約5キロにも及んだそうです。

記事ではその様子が写真特集で組まれており、興味深く拝見しました。

特に印象深いのは、ウェストミンスターホールに安置された棺を撮影したもので、棺は雛壇のような台座に安置され、更に棺の上には王冠が置かれています。台座の四隅を儀仗兵が恭しく囲んでいます。

この台座、棺台のことを、

catafalque

と呼ぶらしいことを、同じくAPの別記事で知りました。

初めて聞く単語ですが、こんなニュースでなければ目にすることもないでしょう。

辞書を引くと、"catafalque"という言葉はラテン語からイタリア語を経てきたものだとありました。

"catafalque"のcata-というのは、"catacomb"（地下埋葬所）という単語にも見られる接頭辞なんですが、ギリシャ語では下（down）を意味するこの接頭辞が"catafalque"にも使われているのは語源的にはよく分からないところがあるそうです。

一方、「やぐら」のような構造は、足場や処刑台を意味する"scaffold"と意味合いを同じくしているという解説が辞書には見られます。
