グーグル、フェースブック、ツイッターなど、名だたるネット大手企業が大規模なリストラを発表していますが、GAFAの一角であるアマゾンもつい先日、従業員1万人を削減と報じられました。

11月も半ばとなり、年末商戦がスタートするタイミングはアマゾンにとっては書き入れ時ですが、見通しは例年とは異なり、楽観できるものではないようです。

アマゾン創業者のベゾス氏自身、今後は景気後退が進むという見通しを持っているようです。

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recently warned consumers and businesses they should consider postponing large purchases in the coming months as the global economy contends with a downturn and faces a possible recession.

Bezos urged people to put off expenditures for big-ticket items such as new cars, televisions and appliances, noting that delaying big purchases is the surest way to keep some "dry powder" in the event of a prolonged economic downturn. Meanwhile, small businesses may want to avoid making large capital expenditures or acquisitions during this uncertain time, Bezos added.

億万長者のベゾス氏が、一般大衆に買い物指南を授けるというのも可笑しな話ですが、同氏のアドバイスによれば、しばらくは大きな買い物をするのは控えた方が良いということらしいです。

その理由は、

keep some "dry powder" in the event of a prolonged economic downturn

ということなのですが、"dry powder"というのは見慣れない表現です。

実際のところ、辞書には載っていないのですが、ネットで検索すると、

Dry powder is a slang term referring to marketable securities that are highly liquid and considered cash-like. Dry powder can also refer to cash reserves kept on hand by a company, venture capital firm or individual to cover future obligations, purchase assets or make acquisitions.

とあり、企業などが持つ、すぐに現金化できる資産、または手元資金のことを言うようです。

一般大衆からすれば出費を抑えてちゃんと貯金しておく、ということでしょうが、それを敢えて"dry powder"と表現するあたり、起業家のベゾス氏らしいというところでしょうか。

ところで、何故に、手元資金のことを"dry powder"と表現するのでしょうか？

"dry powder"は乾燥した粉末ということですが、一体何を指しているのでしょう？

「辞書に載っていない表現」というタグを付けさせていただいていますが、実は英和辞典には、

keep one’s powder dry

という成句が載っています。

これは、用意して待つ、万一に備える、という意味なのですが、17世紀イングランド王国の政治家であったオリバー・クロムウェルの言葉に由来するとの解説があります。

クロムウェルは軍人でもあったのですが、軍団の渡河に際して、

Put your trust in God, but mind to keep your powder dry.

と言ったそうです。

ここでいう"powder"は火薬、弾薬のことです。渡河のために濡れてしまい、肝心な時に使えないということが無い様に、ということですね。
