Friendsgiving

日本の勤労感謝の日は水曜祝日が終わったところですが、アメリカでは木曜日から感謝祭（Thanksgiving）を皮切りにホリデーシーズンがスタートしました。

今日金曜日は祝日ではありませんが、土日に“ブリッジ”して連休にする人が多く、また最近では日本でもすっかり定着した感のあるブラックフライデー（Black Friday）でもあります。翌週月曜日は「サイバーマンデー」（Cyber Monday）と続き、以降、クリスマスまでのカウントダウンと続きます。

感謝祭は家族が集い、豪華なディナーを囲むのが恒例です。この時ばかりは、日本人が年末年始に家族と共に過ごすように、アメリカでも家族が集まるようです。

一方、近年では、家族が遠く離れているような境遇にある人は、友達同士で感謝祭を祝うそうで、"Friendsgiving"と呼ばれるそうです。

Today, I'm one of the millions of Americans who will be celebrating Thanksgiving with friends instead of family.

It's not that I don't love my family. They just live hundreds of miles away in St. Louis. I'll instead be heading to downtown Los Angeles and hanging out with a whole bunch of other gay men.

 "Thanksgiving with friends"で、"Friendsgiving"、典型的なかばん語ですね。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryにもエントリがあるということですが、"Friendsgiving"という単語は2007年頃から使われ始めたところ、酒類メーカーの広告で一気に認知度が高まったとか。

コマーシャリズムが文化や言葉に及ぼす影響は大きいです。
