新年あけましておめでとうございます。今日は2024年1月1日、月曜日、です。本年も「えいご1日1語」を宜しくお願い致します。

さて、今年はアメリカ大統領選が行われる年です。

民主党現職のバイデン氏か、それとも共和党、トランプ氏か？あるいは他の有力候補者か？

米国はいわゆる二大政党制ですが、いずれの選択肢にも期待できない選挙民はいわゆる「第三極」に期待するしかありません。

「第三極」を英語で"third party"と言います。

ところで日本語でもカタカナでサードパーティという言葉がよく使われます。

よく見かけるのはPCやスマホのアクセサリや周辺機器などで純正品でないものを指す用語としてです。

以前"first party"という言葉を取り上げましたが、この言葉がいわゆる純正品を表すのに対し、"third party"が非純正という訳です。

"third party"のこのような意味合いは辞書に見当たらないのですが・・・。
