米大統領選の共和党候補者を選出する緒戦、アイオワ州の党員集会における投票結果が出ました。

トランプ元大統領が過半数を得票、30ポイントの大差をつけられて、デサンティス・フロリダ州知事、ニッキ・ヘイリー元国連大使が続いています。

デサンティス氏はここ数日の情勢分析ではヘイリー氏の後塵を拝するとされていましたが、僅差ながらヘイリー氏を上回り2位となり何とか面目を保った格好です。

以下は、開票後のデサンティス氏のコメントを取り上げた記事です。

DES MOINES, Iowa — Florida Gov. DeSantis (R) signaled that his campaign would power on following his distant second-place finish to former President Trump in Monday’s Iowa caucuses.

“They threw everything but the kitchen sink at us,” DeSantis told a crowd of supporters at a watch party, who responded with chants of “Ron! Ron! Ron!”

“They spent almost $50 million attacking us,” he said. “The media was against us; they were writing our obituaries months ago. They even called the election before people even got a chance to vote.”

“They were just so excited about the fact that they were predicting that we wouldn’t be able to get our ticket punched here out of Iowa, but I can tell you because of your support, in spite of all that they threw at us, everyone against us, we got our ticket punched out of Iowa,” he said.

デサンティス氏の発言に、

They threw everything but the kitchen sink at us

というくだりがあります。

ここに至るまでの選挙活動が厳しいものであったことに触れたものですが、ここで"they"は恐らくデサンティス氏支持者以外の全て、マスコミや他の候補者の支持者を含むのだと思われます。

"everything but the kitchen sink"とは文字通りにはキッチンの流し台以外全て、という意味ですが、英語の慣用表現で、ありとあらゆる、一切合財、という意味です。

思い付くことの全て、考え付く限りのこと全て、という含意があるのですが、ネットでこの表現の解説を斜め読みしてみますと、ここでの"kitchen sink"とは、およそ動かしたり取り外したりすることができないようなもの（動かそうなどと考えないもの）の例えで、それ以外に可能なこと全て、という意味になるとか。

大統領選における候補者間の争いは容赦なく、時に非情なものですが、当初トランプに対抗する有力候補として取り上げられたデサンティス氏が、一旦劣勢と見られるや他陣営から容赦のない攻撃を受けてきたであろうことは想像がつきます。

ところでこの慣用表現に今日触れて思い出したのが、かつてイーロン・マスク氏がツイッターを買収を表明し、すったもんだの末にCEOに収まり、最初の出社日にオフィスにシンクを持ち込んだという一件です。

The bit was, we guess, tied to the accompanying caption, “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!” Maybe something like “getting rid of everything but the kitchen sink” would’ve been a better — albeit just as obvious — idiom to utilize for a guy who plans to do god knows what with everyone’s favorite/least favorite social media platform.

この奇矯な行動はマスク氏がツイッターに投稿したコメントと共に色々なメディアで取り上げられましたが、"everything but the kitchen sink"という慣用句に掛けたものだったのかも知れないとも思い出したのです。

この慣用表現を地で行く行動だったのか、実際にはシンクを持ち込んでいる訳でマスク氏の過激さを垣間見るような一件とも言えます。
