今朝、ラジオでニュースを聞いていましたら、アメリカ大統領選の最新情勢を伝えていました。共和党の指名候補は依然としてトランプ元大統領が優勢ですが、ライバルの筆頭と目されていたデサンティス・フロリダ州知事は失速、ニッキ・ヘイリー氏が浮上しているとの内容でした。

果たして、ネットで米各紙に目を通すと、同様の報道が目につきます。

トランプ陣営はデサンティス氏を蹴落とすのに必死でしたが、ターゲットをヘイリー氏に移しつつあるようです。

そして、トランプ氏お決まりの（？！）ネガティブキャンペーンか始まった模様です。

曰く、ヘイリー氏は生粋のアメリカ人では無いという話がある、故に大統領候補者足り得ない、というのです。

いわゆる、"birther theory"（また、conspiracyとも）呼ばれるものですが、かつてトランプ氏はオバマ前大統領にも同様の攻撃をしました。

これに対し専門家は、根拠の無い主張であり、ヘイリー氏の大統領選候補者としての資格、つまり米国民であることに疑いは無いとしています。

“The birther claims against Nikki Haley are totally baseless as a legal and constitutional matter,” Harvard Law School professor emeritus Laurence Tribe wrote in an email. “I can’t imagine what Trump hopes to gain by those claims unless it’s to play the race card against the former governor and UN ambassador as a woman of color — and to draw on the wellsprings of anti-immigrant prejudice by reminding everyone that Haley’s parents weren’t citizens when she was born in the USA.”

引用されているコメントの中で、

というくだりがあります。

トランプ氏による攻撃の意図を分析したものですが、移民への反感情を利用している、というものです。

ヘイリー氏がインド系アメリカ人であるという事実と、米国を二分する移民問題とをかけて、ネガティブなイメージを植え付けるという目的が透けて見えるようです。

"wellspring"とは源泉のことです。辞書を見ると、

wellspring of affection

wellspring of ideas

wellspring of information 

などの用例が見られます。

つまり、望ましいものや役に立つもの、資源となるものなどについて言うのですが、上記の引用では、

anti-immigrant prejudice

というネガティブな概念であることに注目します。

"wellspring"には尽きない源（a source of continual supply）という意味合いがあるのですが、望ましいものが尽きる事なく得られる"wellspring"は歓迎でも、ネガティブなものが絶えることなく生み出されるような"wellspring"は御免被りたいところではないでしょうか。

このくだりは米国における反移民の感情がもはや抑えることも、留めることも難しいものであり、政治家はそれが自身の利益になるならば有効な攻撃材料として使うことを厭わないということを示しています。
