アメリカではここ数日、民主党大会（DNC）が行われていました。最終日との昨日、カマラ・ハリス副大統領は大統領候補指名の受諾演説を行い、副大統領候補のTim Walz氏も同様に演説を行いました。

演説でWalz氏は、不妊治療を乗り越えてきた経験などに触れ、妻と2人の子供の名前を出して、家族は自身にとっての全世界、と家族愛を強調してみせました。

会場最前列に座っていた息子のGusさんは感極まって涙を流しながら立ち上がり、ステージ上のWalz氏を指差して"That's my dad."と叫んだということです。この様子を捉えたビデオ映像を見ると、Gusさんがちょっと「普通でない」ようだ、というのは分かります。

GusさんはADHDなどの精神疾患の診断があるということです。

MAGA-affiliated accounts on social media have mocked Tim Walz's 17-year-old neurodivergent son Gus for crying during his father's speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.

Gus Walz, who has ADHD, along with a non-verbal learning disorder and an anxiety disorder, and his mom Gwen Walz, were crying when the Democratic vice-presidential nominee gave them a shout-out before the roaring crowd.

Early in Tim Walz's speech, he spoke about his and his wife's struggles with infertility before conceiving their daughter Hope Walz, 23, who was also in attendance. The Minnesota governor gave a brief shoutout to his family, saying, "Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world, and I love you."

Gus was seen crying and cheering after being mentioned by his father, including pointing to the stage and appearing to say, "That's my dad."

"neurodivergent"という表現を取り上げます。

この単語は神経（系）を意味するneuro-に、"divergent"という言葉が付加されたものです。

American Heritage Dictionaryで"neurodivergent"を引くと、

1. Having a neurodevelopmental disorder, especially autism spectrum disorder

2. Relating to or characteristic of people who have a neurodevelopmental disorder, especially autism spectrum disorder

とあります。つまり、自閉症等の精神疾患、障害を患っている、という意味です。

ところで、"neurodiversity"という名詞も同じく精神疾患のことを指すのですが、こちらは、

The viewpoint according to which differences in behavior and cognition that are clinically associated with neurodevelopmental disorders are instead part of a continuum of neurodevelopmental diversity and not disordered.

と定義されています。その意味するところは、精神疾患等を異常と捉えるのでは無く、脳や神経機能の発達上における多様性がもたらすもの、というものです。つまり、ADHDや学習障害、不安神経症などは、疾患、障害などではなく、あくまで脳機能発達の過程が異なるというだけで、多様性（diversity）のひとつ、という捉え方なのです。上で「普通でない」と書きましたが、"neurodiversity"という概念においては大多数とは異なるというだけの話という訳です。

"neurodivergent"の辞書上の定義は疾患、障害ですが、引用記事においては"neurodiversity"に同じく、ADHDと診断されたGusさんへ配慮した表現と考えられます。婉曲表現（euphemism）と言ってよいでしょう。
