米大統領選挙は共和党のトランプ元大統領と民主党のハリス副大統領の一騎討ちの様相ですが、両者の支持率はほぼ拮抗していると報じられています。

トランプ陣営はハリス氏への攻め手を欠くという記事も先日見かけました。

一方で、ハリス氏は大統領候補と目されてから一度も記者会見やインタビュー対応をしていないとの批判が高まっています。

これを受けてか、ハリス氏は副大統領候補のWalz氏と共にCNNの独占インタビューに応じることを決めたようです。

大統領候補指名を受諾後初めてのインタビューとなる訳ですが、ハリス氏は国境問題への対応やその他政策に関する質問、また選挙戦から撤退したバイデン氏の健康状態についてどの程度知っていたのか、など厳しい質問に晒されると想定されています。

他メディアのオピニオン記事で以下のようなくだりがありました。

英和辞典には恐らく補足の説明が載っていると思いますが、"gauntlet"とは2列に並んだ兵士のことであり、懲罰を受ける兵士はこの列の間を通り抜ける間左右両側から叩かれたり鞭打たれたりしたそうです。

そうしたことから、"run through a gauntlet"は集団から一斉攻撃を受ける、厳しい試練に晒される、といった意味の慣用表現として定着したといいます。

2つの"gauntlet"は語源が異なる全く別の単語です。

"run through a gauntlet"における"gauntlet"は、スエーデン語gatlopp（gata-は"lane"、loppは"course"の意）から輸入されたもののようですが、グローブを意味する"gauntlet"という単語のスペルに引っ張られて同化したそうです。（American Heritage Dictionaryの語源解説による。）

ハリス氏は初めての公式インタビューで質問攻めに会う見込みということで、下手な対応をすれば支持率に影響することも考えられます。

メディアと共和党による試練が今回の"gauntlet"という訳です。
