カマラ・ハリス副大統領の7年前の発言がSNSで拡散されているというニュース記事を読みました。

その発言というのが、

everybody needs to be woke

というものです。

この"woke"という単語を当ブログでも5年前に取り上げましたが、アメリカのイデオロギーを語るのに不可欠といっていいくらいのキーワードになっているのは、この単語がその後、左翼的思想を批判するコンテクストで使われるようになったことと無縁ではありません。

従って、7年前と今日とではその意味合いも違ってくるというものですが、「誰もが"woke"であるべきだ」という発言は保守層に近い人間には反発を生むのは間違いないでしょう。

さて、大統領選指名候補となったハリス氏は7年前の発言のために

Communist functionary

と叩かれているということなのですが、この"functionary"という単語を知りませんでした。

意味は「役人」、公的機関に仕える職員、と辞書にあります。公的機関、組織のファンクションに携わる人ということですが、日本語で「役人」という時もそうであるように、組織の歯車となって使命を遂行するだけの人間、上層部の指示に従い唯々諾々と職務をこなす官僚（bureaucrat）、といった、ある種、侮蔑的な響きがあるそうです。

Seven years after Harris joined the 2017 conference, critics on social media are lambasting the presumptive Democratic nominee over the clip, including conservative author James Lindsay describing Harris as a "Communist functionary." 

"Kamala is a low-level Communist functionary, and I'm tired of being told we have to pretend she's not," he wrote.
