sturm und drang

唐突ですが、"sturm und drang"という表現をご存知でしょうか？

スペルからして英語にはちょっと見えません。"und"とあるのでドイツ語でしょうか？。

以下に引用する記事では普通に使われているので面食らってしまいますが、実際、"sturm und drang"はドイツ語そのものです。

Listen, I’m sure there will be a lot of sturm und drang about what the whistleblower disclosures mean for Elon Musk’s Twitter deal, but I want to focus on something dumber and pettier: Jack Dorsey.

研究社の新英和大辞典には、

Sturm und Drang

と、エントリが載っています。

ドイツ語なので、"und"の前後の名詞は大文字で始まります。辞書では、

シュトルムウントドランク（1770年代のドイツに起こった激越なロマン主義的文学運動）

とあります。ドイツ文学に明るくないため、正直なところ詳細はよく分からないのですが、そこから発展した意味としては、

動乱、動揺、革命（turmoil）

ということで、引用した記事で意味するところはこちらの方でしょう。

なお、英語では、ドイツ語からの直訳で、"Storm and Stress"というそうです。

英語は多くの外来語をそのままの形で吸収していますが、この"sturm und drang"もそのひとつだと思います。

もう少し用例を見てみたいと思い、コーパスを検索しますと、多くの用例がヒットし、このドイツ語がほとんど英語として定着していることが窺えます。

The Sturm und Drang over tax cuts for the rich obscured the Democrats' massive capitulation on tax cuts for everyone else.

最初に引用した記事のように、名詞の語頭を大文字で始めるというドイツ語のルールではなく、小文字で"sturm und drang"としているものも多く見られます。

Perceptions of Owens can be misleading. His clothes are often described as goth, cultish, with a sturm und drang sense of turmoil — you can maybe blame those campy pentagrams and trailing robes.

また、ドイツ語の等位接続詞"und"を英語のそれ（and）に置き換え、"sturm and drang"としているものもあります。
