The US Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, claiming that its in-app purchasing system wrongly charged consumers millions of dollars – and that Bezos & Co knew about the problem and did nothing to rectify it.
"As internal emails uncovered in our investigation reveal, immediately after Amazon introduced in-app charges its own employees advised that Amazon was 'clearly causing problems for a large percentage of our customers,' even referring to the problems as 'near house on fire,'" FTC consumer protection director Jessica Rich told a press conference on Thursday.
"That happened in December 2011, right after Amazon started in-app charges. According to the complaint even seven months later Amazon employees again discussed the 'house on fire' situation. For years, despite this very real consumer issue Amazon also allowed children to run up unlimited charges without their parent's knowledge or permission."
(Iain Thompson. FTC sues 'house on fire' Amazon over kids' in-app charges totaling 'millions of dollars.' The Register. July 10, 2014.)
When I meet someone like Eric or Brad -- two serious and good actors -- who are modest men and proper men, we get on like a house on fire.
(Chicago Sun Times. 2004.)

take on
Fukushima farmer takes on nuclear plant operator over wife's suicide
(Reuters) - A Japanese court is due to rule next month on a claim that Tokyo Electric Power is responsible for a woman's suicide, in a landmark case that could force the utility to publicly admit culpability for deaths related to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
In July 2011, nearly four months after the massive earthquake and tsunami that triggered a series of catastrophic failures at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Hamako Watanabe returned to her still-radioactive hilltop home, doused herself in kerosene and set herself on fire.
(Reuters. July 10, 2014.)
take(s) on

“リード”の意味 ― lead (a person) on a chase
Suspected shoplifter found dead in pond
HANOVER, Md. — Officials say a suspected shoplifter drowned in a pond after leading security officers on a chase Monday night.
According to an Anne Arundel County police news release, security officers chased the suspect from Arundel Mills Mall around 9 p.m.. They chased him on foot for about 30 minutes before he went into a 3-acre pond and began to swim.
(USA Today. July 8, 2014.)
after leading...
lead (a person) on a chase
Westminster police fire at and wound a suspected shoplifter after he led police on a chase beginning at the mall. Officials said police shot the man eight times after he tried to run them over.
(Denver Post. 2005.)

censor
A North Carolina mother tells CBS News she "stands behind" the photo of her daughter that got her temporarily banned from Facebook.
While at the beach, Jill White, a professional photographer, snapped a picture of her two-year-old daughter recreating the pose of the "Coppertone girl" from the 1950s, reported CBS Charlotte affiliate WBTV. She had told the news station that her daughter's bathing suit had been pulled down by the little girl's friend.
After asking the friend's mother for her permission, White says, she posted it online.
After she had been temporarily banned for the uncensored version, Jill White posted an edited version.
(Mom fights Facebook's censoring of child's "bum photo." CBS News. July 7, 2014.)
to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

― earthing
THERE'S little time to get our feet dirty in today's world, but that may change as a simple new therapy offers myriad benefits.
The concept sounds too good to be true: Enjoy better health just by walking barefoot on the earth. It may seem a bit hippy-dippy, but research links this practice, known as "earthing", to everything from reduced levels of inflammation and pain to improved sleep.
(Why healthy people are 'earthing.' News.com.au. July 7, 2014.)
Although clinical research is still in its early stages, the results – along with anecdotal evidence – suggest a link between earthing and overall wellbeing. An article published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health in 2012, summarised research studies that have associated earthing with improvements in sleep, diminished muscle and joint pain and reductions in stress levels, and the severity of inflammation.
(ibid.)
