“リード”の意味 ― lead (a person) on a chase

Suspected shoplifter found dead in pond

HANOVER, Md. — Officials say a suspected shoplifter drowned in a pond after leading security officers on a chase Monday night.

According to an Anne Arundel County police news release, security officers chased the suspect from Arundel Mills Mall around 9 p.m.. They chased him on foot for about 30 minutes before he went into a 3-acre pond and began to swim.

万引きの容疑者が池で溺死、というのがタイトルです。逃走中に追い詰められたということでしょうか、池に飛び込んでそのまま浮かんでこなかったそうです。

さて、私はこの記事を読み始めてしょっぱなの、


after leading...


というところで引っかかりました。"leading"の主語は"a suspected shoplifter"、つまり万引きの容疑者、"leading"は他動詞で目的語に"security officers"を取っていることは分かったのですが、"lead(ing)"の解釈がピンとこなかったのです。

つまり、“リード”という意味が邪魔をしたのです。

先導する、先を行く、という意味では何ら不思議ではないのですが、日本語で「容疑者が警官をリードする」というのはちょっと違和感があります。あくまで、逃げる、まく、ということでしょう。

動詞の"lead"にこのような意味、つまり“逃走”といったコンテクストでの用例を求めましたが辞書には載っていません。

しかしながら、よくよく調べてみると記事での用例は、


lead (a person) on a chase


という成句であることが分かりました。「追跡をかわす」、あるいは「（人を）てこずらせる」という意味です。

コーパスではいくつかの用例を見ることができます。


Westminster police fire at and wound a suspected shoplifter after he led police on a chase beginning at the mall. Officials said police shot the man eight times after he tried to run them over.
