いよいよ大晦日の日を迎えました。2009年も今日で終わりです。私は大晦日の紅白歌合戦のファンではありませんが、好むと好まざるとに関わらず、（また自宅にテレビを持たないにも関わらず）この時期に、日本の大晦日の一大イベントについて聞かないということがありません。（現在帰省中ですが、帰省先の実家にはテレビがありますので、そのお祭り騒ぎを聞くことは普段に増してなおさらです。）
本日取り上げる単語、
gala
ですが、音楽の好きな方、特にクラシック関係で、”ガラ・コンサート”という表現を聞いたことのある方は多いと思います。この”ガラ”が、英語で”gala”なのですが、イタリア語、及びフランス語に語源のある単語で、さらに遡ると古フランス語gale（"to make merry"の意）ということです。（American Heritage Dictionaryによる）
”ガラ・コンサート”は、お祝いムードの音楽の祭典、ということでは、クラシックのオペラなどに限らないようです。ちなみに、"gala"としては、音楽に限ったものでもなく、スポーツの祭典でも用いられるようです。
さて、本日の引用ですが、やはりNHKの紅白歌合戦なのですが、YouTubeで一躍時の人となったイギリス人女性が、わざわざこの日本のテレビのお祭り騒ぎに参加するということで、国際通信社の取り上げる記事となっているのを見つけました。
紅白歌合戦が、"a New Year's Eve music gala watched by millions"と表現されています。
なお、正式名称か否かは知りませんが、"Red and White Song Battle"という表現も用いられています。"Japan's best-known music extravaganza"という表現は、"extravaganza"が、個人的にはバロック音楽を想起させるのですが・・・。
Susan Boyle, the Scottish spinster whose talent show performance catapulted her to global stardom, arrived in Japan on Tuesday to perform on a New Year's Eve music gala watched by millions.
Boyle waved cheerfully to fans as she was escorted through Narita airport east of Tokyo, declining a request by television networks to give an impromptu song on the spot.
She is due to appear on Japan's best-known music extravaganza, public broadcaster NHK's year-end "Kohaku Uta Gassen", which literally means "Red and White Song Battle" and has been running since 1951.

年の瀬も押し迫ってまいりました。世界中の人々が大晦日から元日にかけてお祝いするこの時期、そのお祝いの仕方も様々でしょう。
大晦日は英語で、New Year's Eve、略称が定着しているのか定かではありませんが、頭文字をとって、NYEとHeadlineで使われているのを見ました。
NSW govt pleads for good NYE behaviour

"dot"とは、”点”のことですが、その点にぴったり合うということで、"on the dot"は、
（時間が）きっかり
という意味があります。時計の文字盤で、分針がある1点にぴったりと合うイメージです。

最近は私も足を運んでいませんが、アメリカの娯楽において、映画館はやはり健在のようです。クリスマスの週末となった三連休におけるBox Officeでの売り上げが、およそ2億7,800万ドルということで話題になっています。
box officeとは、映画などのチケット売り場のことです。
何故、”ボックス”かと言うと、そのようなチケットを販売しているところが、多くは箱型に覆われていたということに由来するようです。
この単語は、単なるチケット売り場を指す意味から発展し、いわゆる”興行収入”を指すようにもなりました。

クリスマスを考える（5） ― the Santa myth
子を持つ親は誰でもこの時期子供へのクリスマスプレゼントに頭を悩ますでしょう。かく言う私もその一人ですが、昨日はデパートなどを奔走しました。親バカ丸出しのようですが・・・。
サンタクロースがいて、クリスマスイブの夜にはよい子の枕元にプレゼントを届けに来てくれる、なんて今時の子供は信じているのでしょうか？小学校4年の愚息は、クリスマスに毎年プレゼントをくれるのは両親だということはほとんど分かっているようですが、その下の小学校1年になる次男はそこまで確信は無いようです。4歳の三女は今朝は、目覚めると枕元に置いておいたプレゼントの包みを見つけ、うれしそうに抱えて階下に下りてきました。
"myth"とは、”神話”のことですが、実話に対比して虚構だということです。子供たちはいずれ、サンタクロースが作り話であることを悟ります。それでも何故、子を持つ親たちは、サンタクロースがあたかもいるかのように振る舞い、クリスマスイブの夜に、子供が寝たのを見計らってプレゼントを枕元に置くのでしょうか？
改めて考えると何だか馬鹿げた話のようにも思えますが、サンタクロースを心待ちにする子供には健気さを感じますし、プレゼントに期待してベッドで目を瞑る幼子を愛しく思わない親はいないでしょう。
