roller coaster

If you’re at high risk of serious illness or death from Covid-19, it’s time to dust off those N95 masks and place them snugly over your nose and mouth to protect yourself from a recent uptick of the virus, according to a growing number of experts.
(Sandee LaMotte. It may be time to break out the masks against Covid, some experts say. CNN. August 23, 2023.)

Levels of the virus in wastewater from toilets — which can be an early indication of a Covid spike in a community — have doubled, said Dr. Robert Wachter, professor and chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco.

“The virus is always lurking, waiting for openings, so I think Covid is just going to be a bit of a roller coaster, probably forever,” Wachter said.
(ibid.)

roller coaster

(Merriam-Webster)

Gadsden flag

DON’T TREAD ON ME"と書かれています。

A video circulating on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, this week depicted a young elementary school student in Colorado Springs, Colorado, being removed from class for having a Gadsden flag patch on his backpack.

According to the staffer at the Colorado charter school, the patch was "disruptive to the classroom environment" and that it has "origins with slavery."
(Gabriel Hays. 12-year-old boy booted from class over Gadsden flag patch on backpack: ‘Origins with slavery’. Fox News. August 29, 2023.)

whoopie

A Chinese couple who tried for years to conceive was flummoxed after discovering that they’d been having sex wrong the whole time, per a resurfaced report making its rounds on digital media.

“Four years of marriage and neither the husband nor wife knew how to get pregnant,” obstetrician Liu Hongmei, who saw the flustered Guizhou Province couple, told the Guiyang Daily News of their nil-conceived attempt, per the Mirror. “Couples so lacking in general knowledge are very rare.”

The married pair, ages 24 and 26, had sought out medical attention after they were unable to get pregnant despite making whoopie on the reg for four years straight.
(Ben Cost. This couple tried to conceive for years — turns out they were having sex all wrong. New York Post. August 28, 2023.)

they were unable to get pregnant despite making whoopie on the reg for four years straight

Hades

He knew whose hidden hand was sending him 28,000 ft down, to be immolated with the rest of his Wagner group companions in a fireball in the countryside of the Tver region north of Moscow — and then on downwards, of course, for the shade of Prigozhin: down, down to Hades and the Tartarean pit below.

He understood what was going on because for the past few weeks he must, at the back of his mind, have been expecting it to happen — either that or something very like it.

Prigozhin knew whodunnit, and so do we all, don’t we?
(BORIS JOHNSON: That tumbling plane, and Prigozhin's televised immolation, are the ultimate proof there can never be a negotiated peace with Putin in Ukraine. Daily Mail. August 25, 2023.)

down to Hades and the Tartarean pit below

(American Heritage Dictionary)

Window shopping could help you catch some z’s. Getting some steps in pre-boarding can actually help your quality of sleep, Martin says.
(Emily Lefroy. Sleep expert reveals five surefire ways to sleep peacefully on a plane. New York Post. August 14, 2023.)

If you want to get sleep on a plane, Martin says to avoid alcohol and sip on some water instead.

“If you are looking to sleep on a plane, always opt for water instead of alcohol,” he explained. “While it may make it easier for you to drift off, alcohol actually disrupts your sleep and lowers the quality —  making you more tired in the morning.”
(ibid.)
