Hades

ロシアの民間軍事会社ワグネルの創設者プリゴジン氏が死亡した事件は世界に衝撃を与えました。乗っていた飛行機がモスクワ郊外で墜落したもので、ワグネルの他の幹部と共に、かつてプーチン大統領の側近であった同氏の死亡が確認されました。

以下は、ジョンソン元英首相が英デーリーメール紙に寄せた談話記事からの引用です。

He knew whose hidden hand was sending him 28,000 ft down, to be immolated with the rest of his Wagner group companions in a fireball in the countryside of the Tver region north of Moscow — and then on downwards, of course, for the shade of Prigozhin: down, down to Hades and the Tartarean pit below.

He understood what was going on because for the past few weeks he must, at the back of his mind, have been expecting it to happen — either that or something very like it.

Prigozhin knew whodunnit, and so do we all, don’t we?

ジョンソン元首相は、プリゴジン氏を葬ったのは誰か、疑う余地も無いと言っています。飛行機が墜落した原因は未だはっきりしないようですが、ミサイル攻撃だろうと、積荷に仕掛けた爆薬だろうと、原因は何であれ、それをやった人間は明白だと言い切っており、他国の指導者が沈黙する中、激しい物言いだと思います。

"Hades"とはギリシャ神話に出てくる冥府、また黄泉の国、つまり死者が赴く場所のことです。

ジョンソン氏は、

down to Hades and the Tartarean pit below

と言っていますが、"Tartarus"とはHadesよりもさらに下の方にある、底無しの淵とされ、神話ではゼウスが神々に背いた巨人族（Titans）を罰して幽閉した、「悪人の懲罰所; 地獄」（研究社新英和大辞典）とされます。（以前の投稿"turtle"もご覧下さい。）

こうした表現が出てくるあたり、ジョンソン氏はギリシャ神話に精通しているのか、あるいは西洋人にとっては素養なのだろうと思います。
