新型コロナウィルス禍はひと段落したというところではありますが、ここのところまた感染者が増加しているというニュースを耳にします。

日本国内では定点観測による感染者増加が報じられています。海外ニュースで見るのは新しい変異種の話題ですが、実際のところマスク着用を推奨するという話にもなっていふのはやや驚きです。

外出時、店舗や電車内でマスクをしている人も段々と少なくなってきているように感じます。

果たして新しい変異種による感染拡大が今後発生するのでしょうか？再び、ソーシャルディスタンスが呼び掛けられる日が？

Covidのウィルスは完全には無くならない、というのが正しい認識のようです。

ウィルスは無くならず、感染者も一時的に増えたり、また減ったりを繰り返す、つまり、

roller coaster

だというのです。

"roller coaster"（ローラーコースター）は登ったり下がったりするスリルを楽しむ遊園地のアトラクションです。ちなみに、「ジェットコースター」は和製英語です。

そのようなローラーコースターの動きを比喩的に捉えた表現ですが、景気や経済、感染者数、人気など、上がり下がりの変化を言うのに用いられるようになったのは1940年以降だそうです。（Merriam-Webster）
