背筋が寒くなるようなニュース ― obliterate

読んでいて背筋が寒くなるようなニュースです。北朝鮮から、と言えばあまり補足説明も必要ないかも知れませんが・・・。


A high-ranking army official in North Korea was reportedly executed by a firing squad earlier this year for drinking alcohol during the 100-day mourning period following the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, according to South Korean media.

Kim Chol, who served as vice minister of the army, was said to have been accused of drinking liquor during the mourning period for Kim Jong-il and put before a firing squad in January, Australian media wrote.

The Telegraph UK, however, cited an unnamed South Korean media source as saying that Kim Chol was "forced to stand on a spot that had been zeroed in for a mortar round and 'obliterated.'" North Korea's new leader Kim Jong-un allegedly ordered to leave "no trace of him behind, down to his hair."

北朝鮮の金正日総書記が死去したのは昨年の12月、ちょうどクリスマスの前くらいでしたが、いわゆる”喪中”（mourning period）に酒を飲んだというかど（廉）で、軍の高官が処刑されたと韓国のメディアが報じたということです。

射殺だったようですが、故金正日総書記の後継である金正恩による処刑指令は、


"no trace of him behind, down to his hair"


であったということですから、背筋が寒くなるようなおぞましさです。

さて、今日の単語は"obliterate"です。

処刑された高官は銃殺刑により、抹殺されました。"obliterate"に”抹殺”の意味はあるのでしょうか？

単語の成り立ちをご存知の方には釈迦に説法のようになってしまいますが、"obliterate"は、覆う（前置詞のover）という意味の接頭辞ob-、とletter（文字）から成っており、書かれている文字を判読不可能にする、消す、ことを意味しています。

が、American Heritage Dictionaryの定義を参照しますと、1番最初の定義に、


To remove or destroy completely so as to leave no trace


とあり、"so as to leave no trace"というところが、上記に引用した処刑指令の表現とほぼ一致し、まさしく”抹殺”の意味があるようにとれます。
