5時から男 ― nine-to-fiver

昔、ドリンク剤のCMでタレントが扮するしがないサラリーマンが、就業時間終了間際になると急に元気になり、“5時から男”という表現が流行りました。あなたも共感！？（最近のサラリーマンは退勤後同僚と飲みに行くことは少ないそうですが・・・。）

さて、英語では、"nine-to-five"という表現があります。つまり、朝9時から夕方5時、ということを指しているわけですが、Merriam Websterによると


a job with regular time hours


と定義されており、労働時間がはっきりと決まっている労働者、つまりサラリーマン稼業のことを言っています。

ところで、この"nine-to-five"という表現には、単に勤務時間の固定を言うのみならず、“9時から5時までしか働かない”、といったやや侮蔑的な意味でも用いられるようです。


"One of the best ways to get started is to intern at a fashion company," advises Henderson. "I hire eight interns a year in my department, and they're selected from applicants who attend colleges all overthe country. Fashion requires a lot of energy, so those who stand out are the ones who are willing to go beyond normal hours. Do whatever it takes to get the job done. Fashion is definitely not a nine-to-five career."

そして、この"nine-to-five"に“～する人、者”を意味する接尾辞-erがついた、"nine-to-fiver"なる単語が存在します。


Not everyone who works at 85 Broad Street will benefit. Goldman uses many temporary employees, and those nine-to-fivers say they will not share the loot. "It means nothing to me," said one woman, who said she has worked at Goldman for years but does not have full-time status.
