「寝る子は育つ」、とはよく言われることですが、育ち盛りに十分な睡眠を取らないと後々アルコールで問題をおこしやすい、という調査結果があるようです。

アルコールでの問題というのは、アルコール中毒をはじめとして、飲酒運転など、アルコールにまつわる様々な問題ということです。


Teens who have trouble hitting the hay may hit the bottle a little harder as they get older.

Sleep-deprived teenagers are more likely to develop drinking problems, according to a new study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

Researchers studied 6,5000 teens and found that those who had trouble falling or staying asleep were 47% more likely to binge drink, plus 14% more likely to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

"hay"とは干し草、まぐさのことです。家畜小屋や納屋に敷かれた干し草の上で寝ることを"hit the hay"と表現したことから、寝る（眠る）ことを意味するようになったそうです。

ランダムハウス英和で"hay"のエントリを見てみると俗語表現とあるのですが、"hit the hay"以外にも"hay"を使った表現がいくつかあり、単に寝るというよりも、性行をほのめかす表現でもあるということですから、使い方には注意が必要かもしれません。（引用では単に“寝る”という意味で用いられていますが。）
