頭シラミの原因は自撮り！？ ― social media lice

アメリカで学生や十代の若い人に頭シラミの報告が増加しているというニュースをここのところよく見かけていました。シラミというと不潔な人が持っているというイメージが強いですが、先進国で裕福な生活をしている人たちがシラミに悩まされているというのはどうもピンときません。

ところが！です。

今日のニュースでは、頭シラミ増加の原因は自撮り（selfie）だという衝撃の報道です。


Teens should keep their selfies to themselves, lice experts say.

Group selfies are spreading head lice infestations among teens, a Wisconsin pediatrician warned in a back-to-school interview with WBAY-TV on Monday. Dr. Sharon Rink of Appleton joined a growing group of experts who are concerned about so-called “social media lice.”

They blame teens’ head-to-head contact while taking pictures or looking at each other’s phones for an increase in head lice infestation in an age group thought to be less at-risk than younger children.

“Teenagers don’t usually get lice because they’re not sharing hats and things like that,” Rink told the TV station. “And lice can’t jump, so the only way they can transmit lice is touching their heads together, and that’s happening with all these photos.”

自撮りが頭シラミの増加に寄与しているというロジックはどこにあるのでしょうか？

専門家によると、スマートフォンなどを使って友達同士、仲間同士、恋人同士で自撮りする際に頭（髪の毛）が接触することで、シラミが拡散していると考えられるということです。

この現象を言い表すのに、"social media lice"という表現が定着しつつあるようですが、現代の利器ともいえるスマホやソーシャルメディアが引き起こす、予想もつかなかった弊害に笑ってしまいました。

ちなみに、"lice"はシラミのことで、単数形は"louse"、"lice"は複数形です。
