keep one's nose to the grindstone

"keep one's nose to the grindstone"という成句をご存知でしょうか？

例えば、以下のように使われます。


Enjoy your life. Sometimes, you must put your nose to the grindstone and hustle, but you must also know when you can afford to enjoy your life. After all, you can’t take everything to the grave with you.

上記の引用では、"keep"ではなく、"put"が使われていますが、意味は同じです。

一生懸命に働く、という意味の成句なのですが、知らないと訳が分からない表現ではないかと思います。

"grindstone"とは粉をひく臼のことです。自分の鼻を臼に近接させることが何故に、「一生懸命に働く」という意味になるのでしょうか？

一説によると、臼で粉を引く際に気をつけるべきことは摩擦で熱が発生することで、粉の品質が変わってしまうことであるということで、常に鼻を近づけて焦げ臭くないかを確認する行為から由来したそうです。なるほど、ですね。

また、別の説によれば、"grindstone"とは粉引きの臼ではなくて、砥石の意味もあるので、刃物を研ぐ際の動作に由来するということです。つまり、刃物を研ぐ際にほとんど鼻を砥石に近づけるように一生懸命に作業する様からきた表現という訳です。こちらも、なるほど、という感じがしますね。

師走の忙しさを表現するのにもってこいの表現かもしれません。
