絶体絶命 ― on the ropes

"one-time leading internet giant"と聞いて、どの会社のことかと思ったら、Yahooの話題でした。Googleなどとの競争の中で苦戦していますが、直近の報道では子会社を手放すのではという観測が出ていました。同社の行方が今後どうなるのか、しばらく目が離せません。

さて、


on the ropes


という成句を取り上げます。「絶対絶命」というくらいの意味です。辞書を引くと、打ちのめされて、お手上げで、ダウン寸前で、というような日本語も見えます。

このような訳からもお分かりのように、この表現はボクシングに由来しています。対戦相手に追い詰められて、ロープにもたれかからざるを得ない状況という訳です。"ropes"と複数形なのは、ボクシングリングの周囲のロープが複数本あるからですね。（ちなみにボクシングリングのロープというのは3本、あるいは4本に決められているそうです。）

ところで、"on the ropes"の反対は、"off the ropes"となるようです。辞書には載っていませんでしたが、下記の引用からは、「ピンチを脱した」状況を"off the ropes"で表現しています。
