こんな意味もあったの？ ― attention

何故か今頃になって注目を浴びている、クリントン前大統領の不倫疑惑です。（前大統領は不適切な関係を認めていますので、もはや「疑惑」ではありませんが。）

遡ること1990年代後半なのですが、大統領の弾劾まで提起される前代未聞の事態が起きていました。"impeachment"という単語を初めて覚えたのもこの事件がきっかけでした。


It’s the most infamous stained dress in presidential history, but Monica Lewinsky says when she wore it after her widely chronicled hookup with President Bill Clinton, no one noticed.

“I went to dinner that night. None of these people said to me, ‘Hey, you’ve got to go to the bathroom, you’ve got stuff all over your dress,’” Lewinsky said in “The Clinton Affair,” a new A&E series.

前大統領は当時まだ20代半ばの実習生、Monica Lewinskyさんと不倫関係にあったとされます。恐らくはホワイトハウスの大統領執務室での行為中に大統領の精液がついてしまったドレスが取り沙汰されました。

引用記事は当時の回顧インタビューを取り上げたもののようですが、Lewinskyさん自身の発言に下記のようなくだりがあります。


“And so we moved to the bathroom and were more intimate. There was some attention paid on me and then I was reciprocating, where up until that point he had always stopped before completion on his part,” Lewinsky said, delicately trying to explain their encounter.

Lewinskyさんにプレゼントがあるとホワイトハウスに呼び出した後、例のドレスの件に至るまでの詳細な説明がありますが、上記の引用は直接的な表現は避けつつも、かなり生々しいものがあります。

ここで用いられている"attention"には特別な意味合いがあります。

何故か、Merriam-WebsterやAmerican Heritageには見当たらないのですが、ランダムハウス英和では、


婚外交渉、不倫


という意味が載っていました。

American Heritageでは、


Acts of consideration or courtesy, especially in an effort to win someone's affection or gain sexual favors


とあるので、近いと思われますが、単に女性に対する慇懃な振る舞いと生々しい行為はかなり差があるように思います。
